Its original name comes from the Muslim name Bab-Shagra, that means “Sagra Gate”, but later it took its actual name to distinguish it from the New Bisagra Gate. It preserves, still, its former structure, sited in angle and protected by two strong towers, and whose style is mainly caliphal. In its outer façade it shows three Moorish arches, being the central one rounded and pointed in the sides. Under the great central arch is the main entrance with a new Moorish arch, with a decorated keystone and lintel.
Constructed by architect Alonso de Covarrubias, and built in 1550 in a typical Renaissance style, this gate is flanked by two rounded towers with refined ornaments. Nowadays, this gate provides accommodation for the Employment Department of Toledo Council.
This gate could be considered as a twin of Alfonso VI gate. It was discovered in 2002 duringthe restoration works made by the “Escuela Taller de Restauración” in the surroundings of the actual “Puerta Nueva”.
Finally, the El Sol Gate, built in XIVth century in mudejar style, provided access to the Muslim city until the wall perimeter was extended, which stripped it of its defensive duties, remaining as a side walk. Nowadays it provides accommodation for the Mudejar Interpretation Center.
